Amelia Bloomer Project List 2013: Feminist Literature

Annually, the Feminist Task Force of the American Library Association's Social Responsibility Round Table announces the best feminist books for young readers in their Amelia Bloomer Project.  Named for Amelia Bloomer, the  pioneering 19th century newpaper editor, feminist and suffragist, the Project recommends titles of fiction and non-fiction for early readers, middle grades and young adults.  

This year, forty-six titles were honoured with inclusion on the Amelia Bloomer Project, of which only a handful were listed as the Top 10 List of recommended reads.  

Recognized for its message that women have succeeded in confronting traditional female stereotypes, only one #youngCanLit book is included in the Amelia Bloomer Project and, in fact, it was selected for the Amelia Bloomer Top 10 List!

In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up: 2012 Once Upon A World Children's Book Awards Honor Book

Next month, the Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance Library & Archives will present the books selected for the 2012 Once Upon A World Children's Book Awards.  Annually, picture books, fiction, non-fiction and poetry books that promote the themes of tolerance, diversity, respect and social justice can be nominated for one of two awards:

• Book Award for Young Readers  (6-10 years of age)
• Book Award for Young Adults (ages 11+)

Selections that demonstrate the following criteria are considered for nomination:

• depict heroic deeds that lead to tolerance and social justice;
• promote acceptance of social and personal responsibility;
• show a sense of urgency and empowerment of the individual; and
• convey the importance of history. 

CanLit for LittleCanadians would like to congratulate the following Canadian book for its selection as Honor Book for the Once Upon a World Children's Book Award for Young Readers:
