2013 Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature finalists announced


Last year CODE, a Canadian charitable organization that supports literacy and learning, teamed up with William (Bill) Burt and the Literary Prizes Foundation to create the Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature.  This literary award recognizes excellence in English-language literary works for Young Adults by First Nations, Métis and Inuit authors with the aim of improving the access of young adults to books that are meaningful to them and engage them. 

The Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the National Association of Friendship Centres, the Association of Canadian Publishers, and the Canada Council for the Arts are responsible for administering the jury process.

On October 2, 2013, at a gala hosted by Shelagh Rogers and Waubgeshig Rice, the Award for three works will be announced, with a First Prize of $12,000, a Second Prize of $8,000 and a Third Prize of $5,000 also given.

Victoria Book Prizes: Bolen Book Children's Book Prize

On September 11, 2013, the Victoria Book Prize Society of Victoria, British Columbia announced the shortlists for its two book awards, one of which is dedicated to books for young people, the Bolen Books Children's Book Prize.

These shortlisted nominees, selected by a jury of representatives from the literary community, will be honoured and the Bolen Books Children's Book Prize of $5,000 announced on October 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Union Club of Victoria.  Tickets for this event are available for purchase.

The three nominated titles, written by authors from the capital region of Victoria, that have been short-listed for this award are:

2013 Canadian Children's Book Centre Awards' finalists announced


Today, the Canadian Children's Book Centre, our nationally-renowned authority on all things related to youngCanLit, announced the finalists for the 2013 Canadian Children's Book Centre Awards.

The seven major children's book awards, which will be awarded at two invitation-only galas in October, include:

  1. TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award ($30,000) Sponsored by TD Bank Group;
  2. Prix TD de littérature canadienne pour l’enfance et la jeunesse ($30,000) Sponsored by TD Bank Group;
  3. Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award ($20,000) Sponsored by A. Charles Baillie;
  4. Norma Fleck Award For Canadian Children's Non-Fiction ($10,000) Sponsored by the Fleck Family Foundation;
  5. Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People ($5,000) Sponsored by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s Bilson Endowment Fund;
  6. John Spray Mystery Award ($5,000) Sponsored by John Spray; and
  7. Monica Hughes Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy ($5,000)  Sponsored by HarperCollins Canada.
